Treasurer’s report: Jo Bell distributed the
treasurer’s report. There is $1,203 in our
checking account. At this time she does not see a need to put these funds in a
money market account.
Seminar for Mangers: The content
was excellent. Phill will share some of the information in an e-mail to the
membership.
Themes:
Phill will report on the two meetings he has held on potential theme on which
to focus UMA activities.
Welcome: Jan Blue was welcomed to the board.
Heels for Health: The board reviewed drafts of
letters prepared by Fran Allegri and Phill Lyons protesting the elimination of
Heels for Health. After discussion by
the board, Phil volunteered to prepare another draft which he will circulate
among board members before sending to the Chancellor, the Associate Vice
Chancellor for Finance, and the Provost. Laurie Charest will be copied on the
letter. The letter will emphasize the health consequences of cutting out Heels
for Health, the impact on morale, and the desire to find alternative. Subtle pressure may be exerted by a reference
to how money is available for goals of higher administration. Selective information may also be included
from the articles provided by Fran Allegri.
In considering the future of the program, UMA suggested alternatives
were available but did not feel it was UMA’s responsibility to identify the
alternatives. There was also a feeling
that long term evaluation of the program be carried with other units such as
the Center for Health Promotion Disease Prevention Phil will also maintain
contact with Faculty Council and the Employee Forum to coordinate efforts. Rob
Kramer expressed a desire that we don’t do anything that would jeopardize our
professional meeting with the chancellor in June.
Program participation: Jim
expressed a concern over the low participation rate in program. Board members
felt the quality of the programs was excellent and proposed a few explanations
for the low attendance – primarily that employees were overlooked and
pressured. . One way to boost attendance would be to send
everyone a printed program at the beginning of the year with the entire program
so people could have sufficient time to fit the program into their schedule and
to put the program on card stock so that it would be hardy and easy to keep.
Peer to Peer recognition: Peter
reported on his meetings with the Employee Forum regarding their peer to peer
recognition program. UMA voted to give
the Employee Forum $250.00 for 2003-04 to support a peer recognition program..
No conditions were attached to the offer. Jo Bell asked Peter to tell the Forum
that she would need a written request for this money which could come by
e-mail.
Membership: Libby is working to recruit new members from
specified categories of manager sin the Human Resources data base.
