Subject: more on architect Date: Thu, 20 Mar 1997 13:36:23 -0500 (EST) From: Sally Greene To: "Greene, Sarah -- Sarah Greene" Momma, below is yet more interesting news about our architect. Saarinen is who designed Dulles isn't it? Meanwhile my local used book store located three copies of Waugh's book through its vast computer network, so one is on its way. They found three copies, two for under $30 each and one for $120? And where was that one, I asked? In Virginia! Figures. They're crazy for architecture up there and they're out of touch with reality. Went to hear Richard Ford talk last night and to a nice party after, a big party put on by the English dept. Got to get ready for my own party tomorrow night, and to work some too. Hope your trip is/was wonderful. *********************************************************************** Sally Greene Visiting Scholar UNC-Chapel Hill "Brevity is the soul of lingerie." --Dorothy Parker ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 20 Mar 97 13:08:01 -0500 From: Coyla Barry To: sally Subject: "terry waugh"y [This message is converted from WPS-PLUS to ASCII] sally, this is a response from my niece's husband about Waugh. Terry Waugh. I am sorry to say he also designed the dreaded Harrelson Hall. THE SOUTH BUILDS is indeed a rare item. Just let one of the book dealers in CH know, and they will certainly be on the look out. We hold it here in our rare book collection. His wife Elizabeth is/was a local historian, wrote some on Raleigh. As you know I have been talking up the upcoming exhibit of the work of George Matsumoto, who will be visiting campus on April 10 (He is the one I visited when we ventured to Carmel and Monterey...fond memories!) Terry Waugh, a south african, I believe, studied with Matsumoto under Eliel Saarinen at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detriot. Matsumoto and Waugh partnered up in private practice in Kansas City in 1946. They met Henry Kamphoefner at Univ of Oklahoma and he offered them both instructorships. Matsumoto tells a great story of bootlegging their way through the southeast..... Anyway, Waugh and Matsumoto came with Kamhoefner to establish the School of Design in 1948 here at State. Both were known for great innovative designs, Matsumoto won more awards though. We have lots more bio info on Waugh here in the archives, and I could ramble on and on. I am becoming such a librarian, eh? I am curious to see the house some time.... On another note, I am hunting for the location of the Milton and Virginia Julian Residence designed by Matsumoto. Rumor has it the Julians (of Alexander Julian fame) are still around. Do you know of them? Nice to hear from you, and please let me know if I can help in their quest for information. Acy knows bye bye now replete with a wave.....Dave. ------------------------------ Date: 3/19/97 12:23 PM To: Jackson, David From: Coyla Barry [This message is converted from WPS-PLUS to ASCII] hi dave, i have a question about an architect Edward Waugh who designed a house some friends of mine just bought in C.H. Evidently he wrote a book that they got out of the library "The South Builds: New Architecture in the Old South" They would like to acquire the book somewhere. Have you any sources? Used book stores? that specialize in such or do you know anything more ab out Waugh? Don't spend much time on this but if you had any quick ideas I'd be grateful. lv, coyla ------------------ RFC822 Header Follows ------------------ Received: by library.lib.ncsu.edu with ADMIN;19 Mar 1997 12:13:58 -0500 Received: from cc00ms.unity.ncsu.edu (cc00ms.unity.ncsu.edu [152.1.1.35]) by cc09ss.unity.ncsu.edu (8.8.4/NS19Dec96) with ESMTP id MAA23467 for ; Wed, 19 Mar 1997 12:12:16 -0500 (EST) Received: from firewall1_int.glaxowellcome.com (firewall-user@firewall1.glaxowellcome.com [192.58.204.204]) by cc00ms.unity.ncsu.edu (8.8.4/US19Dec96) with ESMTP id MAA18224 for ; Wed, 19 Mar 1997 12:12:15 -0500 (EST) Received: by firewall1_int.glaxowellcome.com id MAA17025; Wed, 19 Mar 1997 12:12:36 -0500 (EST) Received: from ussun2m.glaxo.com(152.51.20.99) by firewall1.glaxo.com via smap (3.2) id xma017005; Wed, 19 Mar 97 12:12:17 -0500 Received: by ussun2m.glaxo.com id MAA27817; Wed, 19 Mar 1997 12:10:15 -0500 (EST) Received: by us0u31.glaxo.com (5.65/DEC-Ultrix/4.4) id AA08176; Wed, 19 Mar 1997 12:28:21 -0500 Received: from umc by us0u31.glaxo.com via MR/USAV00 with conversational-MRIF; Wed, 19 Mar 97 12:28:21 -0500 Posted: Wed, 19 Mar 97 17:10:01 -0500 Date: Wed, 19 Mar 97 17:03:01 -0500 Sender: barry~cb1@glaxowellcome.com From: "Coyla Barry" Message-Id: <33117191307991/4355858@USA> To: "djackson" Subject: architect Msg-Class: ALL-IN-1 V2.4 BL8 27-Apr-1990 + WPS-PLUS V4.0 ------- End of Forwarded message
