Subject: [ebc] Gearing Up for the Fall

Cabinet members,

I hope you’re all enjoying your summers!  We’ve been in contact with many of you in the past couple of months, but this is the first full cabinet email on our new listserv.  Congrats again on being selected for the 2004-2005 cabinet.  The executive branch officers spent several days interviewing candidates and reviewing applications.  There’s a lot to accomplish in the months ahead, but judging from the quality of our members, I’m looking forward to a great year.

I know many of you have been very busy this summer.  I’m proud that, just out of those of you who told me your summer plans, we have cabinet members doing great things on five continents.  Nonetheless, know that a lot has been happening back in Chapel Hill this summer.  Student Government members kicked off our VoteCarolina campaign to register students and bring them to the polls, secured over $4 million for the renovation of the Campus Y building, lobbied the General Assembly to decrease their higher education budget cuts (which they did), worked with faculty to come up with better ways to deal with controversial issues in the classroom, began writing an official UNC student handbook, pushed for increases in financial support for Sport Clubs, helped select a new Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, worked with local government and General Assembly members to unify UNC’s campus into one voting precinct to make it easier for students to vote, launched a Student Code revision project of nearly unprecedented scope, regularly sent volunteers to work at the Interfaith Council’s Center for Social Services, and much more.

Below is a lot of important information.  I know this email is long, but PLEASE be sure to read carefully.  I’ve tried to put everything into one email instead of peppering your inboxes with several.  Some of the items may require your attention or response.

  1. Chief of Staff Tre Jones is in charge of all things cabinet: meetings, communications, organization, and project management.  When you need something, he’s your man.  It is traditional for the Chief of Staff to meet with individual committee chairs and vice chairs regularly throughout the year.  Tre will soon be contacting you to set up the first appointments for early fall.  If you’re in Chapel Hill before the beginning of the year and would like to get a head start, please let Tre know (ajones@email.unc.edu).
  2. The annual cabinet retreat is scheduled for August 28th at 10am at the Eno River.  This will be a chance to get to know the team, go “wafting” (inflatable rafting) on the Eno River, and plan for the coming year.  A few team-building activities; no cheesy icebreakers.  Please mark this on your calendars and make every effort to attend this important retreat, but if you have an unavoidable schedule conflict, please notify Office Manager Kim Clark (ksclark@email.unc.edu).  More on this later.
  3. Attached is a roster of all cabinet members, including the officer corps, and your contact information.  Please notify Kim Clark of any additions or corrections.
  4. All cabinet members are asked to hold three office hours per week in Suite 2501, split any way you like.  These office hours are selected by you and are intended to provide students and media with predictable times that they can talk to Student Government representatives.  While you’re in the office, you’re free to surf the web or do homework, but I know you’ll probably be eager to work on Student Government projects. ;-)  As soon as you know what your schedule will be for the fall semester, please email your office hours to Kim Clark.  You’ll obviously be asked to pick a new set in the spring.

Whew.  That’s all I have for you for now.  Enjoy your summers, keep in touch, and see you soon!

Take care,

Matt Calabria
